Energy efficiency and energy savings in buildings are at the heart of the news. In this context, bio-based materials, and more specifically hemp, appear to be a sustainable solution.
According to a study conducted by Cerema (in conjunction with Construire en chanvre), hempcrete could reduce heating costs by up to 70%! Whether used in new construction or renovation, its thermal performance makes it a more effective insulating material than conventional materials.
Things are moving in Aube for hemp concrete!
Almost 10 years after the highly iconic renovation of the Maison du Tourisme in Troyes, momentum continues to build around the promotion of hemp concrete in the Aube department.
In 2020, the administrative buildings of the new hemp processing unit of the La Chanvrière agricultural cooperative in Saint Lyé were built entirely using wood and hemp concrete. Two years earlier, in the same town, the municipal library was given a facelift with hempcrete. This achievement was highlighted at the latest International Sustainable Building Conference organized by Envirobat Grand Est in October 2021.
In 2021, CIBBIOS, a member of Collectif 3C Grand Est, won the regional bioeconomy trophy in Grand Est, in cooperation with the Hemp European Hub. A great honor for this young company specializing in custom-made prefabricated hempcrete components!
A few weeks ago, Alain Fernandez de Grado and Didier Glais welcomed us to their workshop in the heart of the Aube region, 30 km from Troyes. An opportunity to rediscover the performance of hemp concrete and discuss their latest achievements.
CIBBIOS was also present at the Troyes Home Show on September 24 and 25 to showcase their prefabricated hempcrete walls. Impressive, full-scale demonstrations are needed to raise public awareness of hempcrete!

A hempcrete wall for an eco-friendly cinema
On the construction site, we visited the Utopia Cinema in Pont-Sainte-Marie to watch the construction of a wall made of timber and hempcrete. Utopia aims to be a sustainable, independent, and environmentally friendly cinema. To meet this objective, bio-based materials are at the heart of its construction. This eco-cinema project is part of the creation of the first eco-neighborhood in the Aube department. An ambitious project in terms of the environment and sustainable development supported by elected officials and local economic stakeholders.

Great prospects for hemp in construction!
